What do the stars mean?

They show how heavily red-light and traffic-device summonses have been written to people on bikes, e-bikes and scooters within 200 m of you, weighed by the hour of the week. Any ticketing nearby is one star; six stars is reserved for the 40 worst corners in the city at their worst hour. The Scoring methodology section at the bottom of the app has the details.

It says "Out of range"

Wanted Level currently has data for New York City only. Outside the five boroughs you can still drag the map to look around New York. More cities are planned.

How do I show my wanted level in other apps?

iPhone: tap the button under the stars. On iPhones with a Dynamic Island the stars appear there while you use other apps, and on the Lock Screen; on other iPhones they appear on the Lock Screen. Live Activities must be allowed for Wanted Level in Settings.

Android: tap the button under the stars, allow "Display over other apps" for Wanted Level when asked, and allow location. A small badge then floats over your other apps; drag it where you like, tap it to come back to Wanted Level.

How current is the data?

The app covers the most recent 12 months published by the NYPD on NYC Open Data, and is updated about every quarter. The date the data runs through is shown at the bottom of the app.

Does it show where police are right now?

No. It shows where summonses have been written in the past. It is not a live police tracker and not legal advice.

Does it track me?

No. Your location stays on your phone. See the privacy policy.
